Freshippo Opens a Store a Day in September Expansion Frenzy

The launches include stores in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai, while Freshippo’s first luxury grocery experience will open its doors on September 28.

High-tech supermarket chain Freshippo is unveiling 30 stores across China in September, averaging one opening a day to keep up with consumer appetites for fresh food from around the world.

Freshippo has become one of the largest supermarket chains in China since launching in 2015, and by the end of September, the company will have over 350 stores in total.

Its growth reflects demand among the country’s consumers for high-quality groceries.

Natural ingredients, flavour, and brand reliability are shoppers’ biggest buying considerations for food products, according to consultancy McKinsey’s 2022 China Consumer Survey.

Also, Alibaba Group’s high-tech grocery company Freshippo said it cut the ribbon on its largest supply chain centre to date on Monday. Located in Shanghai, the nearly 1 million square foot centre can sort over 2.8 million items per day – a mix of local and globally-sourced grocery goods curated to feed China’s growing appetite for quality foodstuffs.
